Somewhere over the rainbow...

Chinchillas make wonderful pets as they are relatively easy to maintain and are a delight to watch. If you are lucky enough to have a tame chin that loves to snuggle up in your arms, treasure the chin! Although my chins are tame, they are very frisky and would rather be running around destructing wooden furniture than have me cuddle them. A forum member at a chinchilla forum gave a perfect description of chinchillas: "Chins are like little boys. They hate to be kissed and cuddled by their mummies and would rather roll around in the dirt, jump about bouncing off the walls, saying 'Look at me Mummy, see what I can do!' "

The start up costs (a good sized cage, suitable bedding, correct food and the chin itself!) can set you off by quite a lot. Chins also require a relatively cool environment, or they can die of heat stroke. To find out more about chin care, do visit my Pet Links and Webrings page for links.

CHINCHI

Chinchi is a beige male chin who is going to turn 1 year old this coming december. When I first got him he was not very tame and during the first few nights, he kept barking as he was not used to being in a new environment. Kept me awake for a few nights, as he is in my room. Eventually he adapted and now will sleep through anything during the daytime... except for treats of course.. He is small for a chin, compared to my other female chin Maia, who is months younger than him.

He is a very intelligent chin (personally I think all chins are remarkably intelligent!). He has learned how to slip under his cage door to escape if it is left unlocked. The cage door opens inwards into his cage. For months he would pull the cage door up open with his teeth then realise that he cannot hold it up and get out of the cage at the same time as the door would drop close once he lets go of it. So...one day he figured out that if he quickly put his head underneath the door after pulling it up, he could squeeze through the opening and voila! Freedom!

MAIA

Maia's a lovely female mosaic chin. I fell in love with the coat colour mosaic after I saw some very cute mosaic babies's photos on a popular chin forum. So in other words, Maia's my dream chin! She was born on 12th May 2002 and is very tame compared to Chinchi. She has a most wonderfully soft and dense fur to touch. Currently she's in her adolescence stage, so she's going through her teenage angst time...she nibbles everyone and just wants to explore, explore and explore everything!

Chinchi is very much in love with Maia..their cages are side by side and he always chatters to her non-stop at night.. I do intend to put them in together in the same cage but not now as Maia's too young to mate.. Looking at her sexy pose below, its a no wonder Chinchi's so crazy about her!
